Stepping over thresholds

of separateness, differences,

we gather gratefully

creating circles,

however small or large;

the only consensus

a desire to share

on this most native

of American holidays.

Friendship and neighborliness

urge us to remember:

once a long time ago,

very different people chose

to sit across from strangers

with nothing in common

but mutual danger,

curiosity,

survival.
