Conversation Overheard in the Grove

“Do you know me, lovely daughter,
little sapling straining upward,
hungry for sun,
thirsty for rain,
all tendrils and folded leaves?
Feel your way into the earth.
Reach for me there.
Follow my heartbeat in the loam below.
I am the mother tree
looming beside you,
sheltering, filtering, reaching down
for your tender crown.
I tame the wind and lightening,
hold the ground, break rocks,
channel rivulets for you.
Send your roots to meet mine
down where the fungi grow.”
“I too am here, Grand Daughter.
I crouch here beside you
bent to the setting sun,
limbs scattered, broken
among my seedlings.
Scarred and charred,
I still clutch the earth
with my decaying claws
sinking in to the forest floor
to nourish you all.
Intertwine with me in the deep."
"Listen to me now.
I will tell you the story
of the ancient forests
on which you stand."
