You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
From “Still I Rise” by Dr. Maya Angelou
She has flown.
Courageous cable car conductor
quiet for so long,
Actress beyond the ordinary
and beauty-less,
Polyglot teacher for generations
of the hapless,
Activist pounding on our helmets
without remorse,
Peace warrior traversing
the globe, and time,
Word dancer crooning love songs
for all our babies,
Ancient soul hefting a lantern
against the dark,
Shouting now from your perch
high above,
We can take no solace in the silence
of your empty cage.
